Does anybody here have a 2016-2017 Renegade Backcountry X? I would love to know what owners think of the 146 track on and off trail? I am thinking of Snowchecking one once available. I would love to see some pictures too. I would imagine it will be available with the new 850 Etec for spring order.

I have a 2016 Backcountry X 800 and absolutely love the sled. No more "getting stuck anxiety" for me winter camping vs my 08 F10 Cat I had. Build quality blows Cat away by a mile. My application is a bit different as its primarily a high performance utility winter camping sled first/off trail boon-docker second and a trail sled third. I ride 70/30 off trail/on. Mine has the 2 inch track. Ski Doo scratchers are mandatory imho. The scratchers were the only disappointment as they wore out in a couple rides and were too short to stay up after that. JB Welded on a threaded aluminum nut to the worn ends and now have replaceable 1.75 carbide tips that are working awesome so far this crappy 2017 winter.
I read so many bad things about XM`s T Motion on trail performance I was not expecting too much on long trail rides. Can you rail corners like a XRS Rennie.....no ....but its surprisingly comfortable on big bumps with the 146 length and does not overheat with the 2 inch track and scratchers down.
The suspension is set for 40inch width and I have 8 inch carbides. I have the externally adjustable limiter strap which I think is also mandatory to get the best of both worlds weight transfer wise for on/off trail. The suspension in corners is more active than a XS chassis obviously but I find it works for me in corners if I get really aggressive with weight transfer. With aggressive weight transfer it seems to lean into the corner a bit like a motorcycle and I get no inside ski lift that I read about. I have a friend with a Free Ride and he hates it on trail though. I can keep up to my friends on trails just fine. Could I keep up to a highly skilled rider on a XRS...no way but thats not my application here. The 2016 BCX is much better than I expected "on trail" though. I can go just as fast cornering as my 08 F10 Sno Pro easily.
If the BCX moves to the Gen 4 chassis it will only get better. BTW this thing tows great too with the lower gearing. I pull twin boggans with over 500lbs 20kms each way camping and have no abnormal clutch or belt wear.
I ride with a 2016 Expedition Extreme and can go anywhere he can. My first Doo and I am super happy with this sled but its not for everybody.

Winter camping that's sounds cool.
Do you have any pictures of one of your camps set up?
Are you fishing from camp or using it as a staging area to get further out in the back country for riding.

No problem Backwoodsrider......not many guys are running this sled on trails to get a solid real world opinion. Larry at Larry`s Small Engines near Orangeville was bang on with his advice that the BCX 146 with 2 inch lug/scratchers and T Motion were not that bad at all on trail. Forums were not as kind to the narrower front end XM/T Motion chassis and I would have expected it to be a real turd on trail if I had only read forum opinions. Larry can provide reliable advice on fringe applications most dealers know little about. Larry could smoke most trail riders on "trail only" sleds with a Summit so the rider skill set obviously makes a big difference in enjoyment on trail. BTW my buddies huge 2016 Expedition Extreme rocks and he can go surprisingly fast on trail. He is a 140lb pound guy and looks like a ant riding a june bug on that thing.

I have a '17 BCX with the 2" track. Just through break-in now. I absolutely love this sled. I agree with what was stated above. Great on and off trail. This is my first long track/XM sled. Only shorty's and 137 renegades prior. My buddy got the FR146 and we've swapped a bit. They are quite similar with the obvious differences. We have scratchers on both but surprisingly have rarely needed to use them so far.

Hey Gun Driver....now your going to get me into thread drift here asking about camping! I do different types of winter camping but sled in "comfort" winter camping is my favorite. I set up base camp and then tour for all over ice fishing and playing in the powder. I like to combine hobbies winter camping and ice fish/target shoot/snowshoe/do nature photography/hunting for First Nations Pictographs and Petroglifs exploring shore lines etc. And of course drinking whiskey when the day is done back at camp.
Last few years got into "hot tents" with a wood stove. They are the cats a**!
Cabelas outfitter cots/pads/Wiggys -40 bag system makes for "like home " sleeping comfort. I have gear hammocks in my hot tents that dry out your clothes while you sleep. Will be testing out a new LED 12v lighting system with a small solar panel this year. I do a week camping trip every winter near Temagami Ontario. I prefer it to going down south for a winter holiday. My friends think I was "dropped" as a baby to like it though.
You can email me at [email protected] and I will send you a short Go Pro video of my last years camp set up with a new custom 12x14 insulated wall tent I had made. I am no expert but have 15 years of experience to share if your into trying it.
Sled camping is a blast and adds a new dimension to sledding for me. Sorry for the thread drift....

Thanks for the pictures!! I will most likely move forward with the Backcountry X 850 etec for spring order. I love the black on black look! Very sinister looking.

Can you give a proper comparable between your machine and your buddies freeride

We've ridden mostly trail with them so far with only a little off trail time.
Although both seats are nearly the same height at the back, the seat on the FR is hard in comparison and not as trail friendly but it is narrower feeling when standing. The shocks on the FR were noticeably more firm with both machines shocks set up in the middle to start with. I have since firmed mine up a bit and have no complaints. The post forward position on the FR is a bit more comfortable for standing. I did replace my 6" riser for an 8" Powermadd so bars are same height on both. My machine is noticeably warmer riding even though his has an X windshield and hand guards installed but I do prefer the narrow feel of the XM panels. Just feels a bit less "tubby" when laying it over. Maybe it's all in my head...Idk.
Not positive but I think mine might be a little faster. He said about 85 was all he had. I hit 85 once very briefly and had more to go but was fast enough for me so I backed off. Also speed not good for these tracks. Not why we purchased them so no big deal just an observation.
I have not noticed the difference in the lug height. So far we've both gone the same places with similar ease but nothing very deep or challenging yet so we'll see..
We both prefer the t-motion to our old r-motion sleds. Maybe not as smooth on a rough trail but it's marginal to me. I like the way the sleds respond to body English. Almost like riding a dirt bike. Throttle, lean and gas and they raise the skis and arc out of anything.. A corner in the trail or a deep ditch full of snow..It doesn't matter. We both have dually 6" shapers and they handle very well on trail- edge to the FR shocks in the bumps though. Both have a little push in corners but not bad. We both have Skidoo rail mounted scratchers but have rarely had to use them yet.
Versus a coupled skid, they are an absolute blast to ride. Both sleds will wheelie with ease.
Like I stated, the differences are somewhat obvious if you look at both sleds. I purchased mine because I wanted a little more trail friendly sled but what has surprise both of us is how trail friendly the FR actually is with its 2.5" lug.

Thats a great comparison. I was also thinking about the Freeride 146.
The pictures look great. If you have any more pictures I would love to see them.

Indecision, I just got back from Quebec and 1486 miles on my 17 XRS Renegade and it was great on trail. I went off trail a lot to play in 5 feet of powder and even though it was a blast, my sled was lacking. I am planning on snowchecking another sled this spring for 80/20 off trail. Thanks for the review. I am going out of my mind trying to figure out what to buy. I am leaning heavily towards 154" length and the Freeride has that, but I want another all black sled. I also like the front end set up as it is almost the same as my XRS. Ideally I'd like the 850 in a 154 with a 2 - 2 1/2 inch track my front end and the Summit X Black/Green colors. Too bad Doo did not have a program the we can order what we want, lol. Can't wait until March to see what my options are!

Backwoods rider:
That's about all I have for pics so far. Only rode a few days before this melt down in Wisconsin.
Stosh:
I have the 2" lug. It's fine on trail. I debated it to death before I ordered. I made the right decision. Don't even consider the 1.6 cobra unless you are a trail only guy. Mind you, I live in NW WI lake effect snow belt.
2fast-4u:
If you're planning to keep the xrs as well, go all out MTN sled -154 summit X or FR. You'll then have the best of both worlds. Remember, any sled can do (almost) anything with a skilled rider. Some just do it alot better than others. I have no problem on trail with the BCX 2". The FR 146 rips up the trail also and I have a friend on a new SKS 155" that was right there with us. If you have a chance to ride one first, I highly recommend it. I think you'll be surprised.

I was going to respond to this but I don't have a Backcountry X just a lowly Backcountry with a 2" paddle and Dynamo Joe Kit.

I have a 2016 BCX as well and totally concur with what others have said in this thread...it works like a dream both on and off trail, I did spend some time getting the suspension set up to my liking (including heavier torsions) but I am trilled with the ride, handing and comfort.
Bushtripper, I have a twin to your sled, although I swapped out the "skidoo" decals on the hood for black ones just to be different...what is your VIN? Mine is 0006.

Thanks for all the replys! Much appreciated. The backcountry x seems to be a bit of a rare bird. I cant find many reviews on it on youtube. I would rather take the opinion of the people of actually own it and ride it.

I have a 16 Backcountry 146, with the 1.6 track, and it's doing just fine in off trail riding. I wanted a X package in Jan of this year, when I purchased, but none available. I was skeptical of the smaller lug, but it does well in the flatland backcountry riding I'm dooing. Perhaps in a deeper powder year, I will swap up to the 2",
As for the X package shocks, I'm not familiar with their ride quality, but the stockers weren't great. I upgraded to EXIT x2's and would give them a big thumbs up.
Great sled all around.
